Signal
I’ve started a group chat on Signal and added a mix of close people, local artists and acquaintances I've met and liked the vibe of. I want this space to be community based, not an inner circle. I want third spaces free from profit agendas. Spring is here and we don't need Instagram in order to enjoy it together in the park.*
Please read these rules:
- Racism, sexism, homophobia, misogyny, transphobia, ableism is not welcome.
- By engaging in this space it's your shared responsibility to interrupt and educate wherever bigotry arises.
- This circle is predominantly LGBTIA+; respect pronouns and identities.
- Make others feel equally welcome; there is no role above another.
- Ask others for permission to message them directly; respect No.
- Express it if you're uncomfortable; seek communal resolution.
- Leave no trash behind, keep spaces clean and tidy together.
- If you see these things happening, say something; speak up if these rules are being broken.
There is zero tolerance for:
- Willfully spreading hate speech / Nazi / Zionist / Alt-Right ideology.
- Sexual harassment; touch without consent, innuendo, violating personal space.
- Digital harassment; unwanted DMs, calls or texts.
- Stealing / damaging / touching somebody's things without asking.
- Spamming group chat with random things / memes / self-promo.
- Sharing others information without permission.
If anyone breaks these rules, or is generally deemed anti-social / disruptive by others, they will be messaged directly about it to discuss and may be barred from the group.
These lists are not extensive; these are just a starting point. Community safety is often nuanced and always case-by-case. We've got to look after each other, we notice and decide together, no-one else can do it for us.

Why is it on Signal? I want to envision a local scene that doesn’t require Instagram or Facebook to stay in the loop. I want to encourage my local circles to value data privacy over convenience. I want us all to build more habitual resistance to surveillance capitalism. Signal is the most common chat app I could find that is encrypted end-to-end by default.
